U.S. Law and Legal English
The University of Alabama English Language Institute (ELI), in conjunction with the UA School of Law, is pleased to offer a semi-annual four-week certificate program in U.S. Law and Legal English.
PARTICIPANTS
This four-week certificate program is intended for nonnative speakers of English who wish
- to learn more about the U.S. legal system,
- to improve their proficiency in English, particularly legal English, and
- to gain short-term experience living and studying in the United States.
Most participants are either practicing lawyers/judges in their home countries or law students in the U.S. or in their home countries. However, any nonnative speaker of English who is interested in law is welcome to apply for admission to the program. To fully benefit from this program, it is recommended that participants have English proficiency equivalent to a minimum TOEFL score of 500/173. Participants must be at least 17 years old.
PROGRAM FEATURES
- Welcome reception and orientation
- 20 hours/week of instructional activities
- 10 hours/week conducted by the UA School of Law
Topics may include the U.S. judicial system, U.S. constitutional law, corporations and business entities, contracts and commercial law, torts and personal injury, and international transactions. Activities include classroom instruction as well as visits to a variety of law offices and local, state, and federal courts. - 10 hours/week conducted by the UA English Language Institute
Instruction includes oral and written communication as well as legal English vocabulary and usage in the U.S. - Program banquet with presentation of certificates of participation
- Housing and meals on the campus of The University of Alabama
- Cultural and recreational activities
- Participants have full student access and privileges to facilities and events at The University of Alabama, including six libraries, several computer centers, the recreation center, and sporting and cultural events. In addition, a number of activities are planned specifically for participants in the U.S. Law and Legal English program, including a weekend excursion to New Orleans, Louisiana.
